Question

My dog had surgery a month ago when her disc pushed into her spinal cord. She had surgery within 24 hours of becoming paralized. She is scooting around with control of one of the back legs and still dragging the other back leg with her toes knuckled under as she drags it. My question is a fluid like sack about 2 inches in diameter has appear on the incision line on her spine. It feels like water and if you touch it, it just moves like a water balloon. She does not appear to be in pain and it does not appear to bother her. I'm just concerned about it. Do you know what this is? Is it something I need to worry about?

Hello,

Well, I would have hoped for greater return to function of that other back leg, but that is tough for me to even comment on.

This swelling at the incision site may represent a seroma. This is an inflammatory reaction under the skin that is usually filled with clear bloody discharge. It could also represent a reaction to the suture material that was used. Unfortunately, we cannot rule-out the possibility for an infection starting.

Definitely, worth a recheck with the surgeon just to be safe.

They may recommend a fine-needle aspirate test to better identify the fluid under the skin or the contents of the sac.

A fine-needle aspirate test is performed usually without anesthesia and is very quick. Your veterinarian takes a few needle samples from the lump (the needle is no larger than the needle used to give vaccines). The sample is smeared on to microscope slides and submitted to the laboratory. It is not always as definitive as a biopsy (this is a full tissue sample), but often it can yield enough information to determine if it is anything to be worried.

http://www.petplace.com/dogs/cytology-in-dogs/page1.aspx

http://www.petplace.com/dogs/fine-needle-aspiration/page1.aspx

Good Luck

Dr. Andy

I took Molly to the vet today and you are correct, it isa seroma. The Vet said it was very soft with no redness or stiffnes and he felt it would go away on its own in a few weeks. He said to take a sample would mean allowinjg an avenue for infection that he would prefer not to do. Since she appears to fine in all other areas we are going to watch her and let it go away on its own. Thank you for your guidance. You provided enough info to get me through the night until I could get her to the vet today.

Answer

Sounds perfect Peggy, and I do agree with not doing the needle test if your vet is comfortable with it being a seroma.
Sounds like a good plan.
