Question

Our old Golden Retriever (found as stray so unsure) threw up a cat toy this a.m. It was a small sock w/ cotton & catnip in it. He already has trouble getting up due to arthritis but now won't even try to move. He feels warm, panting more than usual and refuses to eat. We carried him outside and he peed and pooped (soft but not runny). He drooled a little while up. We had talked about putting him to sleep only when his mobility was so limited that he would soil himself, or if he was suffering. Help! Do you think we should take him to have x-rays, surgery, etc.? Should we euthenize him? He isn't acting like he is in pain! Thank you, Pam (and Gabriel)

Optional Information

Pet's Sex: Male
Pet's Age: 10

Already Tried:
Nothing, we can't get him to take his meds (Rimadyl, Glucosamine and Tramadol. We are trying to get him to drink water (he had a little) but refuses food. He is lying on a bed, sleeping most of the time and we are lying next to him for comfort.

Answer

Hello Pam and Gabriel,
I am sorry to hear about your concern.
Certainly, I would not jump to the euthanasia decision just yet.
My greatest concern is that if that toy was vomited up, what else could have been ingested that is causing additional symptoms of distress. Now, even if the cat toy was the only foreign body, it stil could have caused a lot of stomach wall inflammation while it was in there. I calso can't vouch just yet that the panting is not due to pain versus nausea from the dietary indiscretion.
Definitely, worth a veterinary evaluation to start, and absolutely some x-rays to ensure nothing else is still retained within the stomach or intestines. At that point, the vet may be able to offer some good medications to make him more comfortable.

In addition, if you are not already doing so, some great! alternatives for arthritis, even if severe, include doing a combination of the following:
1. Getting a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory from your vet called Rimadyl, Deramaxx, or Metecam.
2. Combine this with a pain medication called Tramadol, which you should also be able to get from your vet.

Hope that guidance helps.
Good Luck

I just saw the second half of your info.
Definitely, worth getting him into the vet for the x-ray, and a basic blood test for an overall health assessment would be very helpful.

Also,
To help settle the stomach you could try one of the following drugs. My favorite product is Pepcid (an over-the-counter antacid).

Pepcid (Pepcid A.C.)
Pepcid comes in 10mg or 20mg tablets. You can give it every 12 hours.
The dose can be found within the following link:

Prilosec
