Question

My 19 week old cat was declawed 3 weeks ago. About a week after the surgery she started biting at her claws to the point that they were bleeding. We ended up putting an E-collar on her. Our vet suggested leaving it on for 2 weeks. This past Monday, the vet said that her paws were healed and that we could start taking the collar off more and more each day. However, everytime we take the collar off, our cat will continuously lick and bite at her paws to the point that they get very red and look like they might begin to bleed. We've tried the Bitter Apple spray but she just licks it off. We need help. Is there anything we can do? Thank you for your help with this situation.

If the incisions were glued then chances are the glue is stuck on her fur and it is bothering her. You can take a look at the paws yourself and see if there are hard bits of glue present. With some of this you can pull it off yourself. However, so soon after surgery there is a possibility of causing the areas to open so you might want to talk to your vet if you can feel and see glue or hard substances and ask them to get it off of her paws. She will still be painful even 3 weeks out from surgery so I would also consider another week or two of pain medication if you can as well as this may help to deter her from chewing on her feet. Until then I would monitor her with the cleaning which is normal but excessive cleaning can still cause some harm and introduce infection to her feet. If she gets to the point it does actually open or drain then she should have the ecollar placed back on until you can revisit your vet. Your vet should not charge you since this is still a post operative recheck.
