Question

Home owner/experienced diy'er Termite Prevention   I have a 25 yr old, 2900 sq ft (2100 heated, 500 garage & 300 screen 3 season room) single story home with 2 car garage on a slab in Jacksonville, FL with a in ground pool (60 ft of pool deck abuts house & 3 season room) and 3 season room.

What are your comments re: diy liquid termite treatment?   What is your experience and expertise with termite control? Home has gutter all the way around. No evidence or knowledge of current problems. I have observed and discussed professional treatment recently with pro of another home in Savannah, GA. Have a Hilti concrete drill & access to commercial pressurized sprayer. Are you familiar with & can you comment on Domion termicide? Are you familiar with the doityourselfpestcontrol.com that allows diy'ers to purchase professional products?

Please answer all questions, give recommendations, techniques, helpful websites and comments/opinion.

Thank you

Answer

Thank you for using Just Answer!

My experience with pest control is that I was a termite service technician/salesman for 2 years in Jupiter, FL.

Anytime there is a concrete slab abutting a structure it was necessary to drill through the slab approximately every 12 inches and then apply termiticide with a spray downrod. Even though you do not have any evidence or knowledge of termites in that area it is still a good idea to do a treatment to protect your property. The holes can easily be patched with a concrete repair mix from HD. Just add water, stir, and apply to holes. Make sure to stuff some newspaper into the holes first so that you don't keep filling a hole with concrete patch.

I have personally never applied the product called Dominion. We always used either Termidor or Premise. I personally believe that Premise lasts longer in the soil and does a better job. The advantage of Premise is that it is not a repellent. The termites will pass through the chemical without knowing it and then transfer the chemical to other termites by contact. This way it provides a kill by transfer and provides the opportunity to wipe out the colony completely. As far as mixing and applying the product will be no problem since you have access to the proper equipment. Just follow the manufacturers recommendations on the package when mixing and applying. I personally would recommend treating with the Premise.

I just checked out the diy pest control site. It looks like an informative site that can be useful to any homeowner that is handy and interested in taking care of their own pest control. It also provides access to purchasing the products that the PC pros use as part of their standard services.

Feel free to post any follow-up questions you may have.

What is the best way to get the termicide into the holes drilled?

Answer

There long rods that you extend down into the holes. The handle has a squeeze lever and a hose running to the chemical tank. When you squeeze the handle it applies chemical through small holes in the end of the downrod.

Have you ever heard of tool rentals renting the long rods that you extend down into the holes?    If a homeowner follows the directions exactly for Premise, do you think it is a good idea to do your own termite protection? Do you think If a homeowner follows the directions exactly for Premise, the risk is about the same as if a pro did the job (excluding the benefits of a bond/insurance for damage)?

I will accept after you response to this communication. Thanks for your help.

Accepted Answer

If you follow the mixing directions then it can be done effectively by a homeowner. All non crete areas should be trenched, apply premise and then backfill. I would recommend calling some rental companies to check on the spray rod. Maybe you could convince a pest control company to rent one for a day. It is important to use this rod to achieve a continuous barrier.
