Question

My right eye hurts when I blink. There is a small amount of redness on the the inside of the eye just along the iris where the edge of my contact sits. Any idea what the problem could be?! I want to try avoiding going to the dr. if I can.

Info Request

XXXXXXXXXXXX,

Do you notice any bumps at all? Does your eye seem to be sensitive to light? Do you have any other symptoms?

Answer

XXXXXXXXXXXX,

This could be the beginnings of a stye. This is a type of infection caused by bacteria that normally live on the skin surface of the eyelid. Typically you would apply warm compresses for 10 minutes 4 times a day. If you see a bump form, don't squeeze it and let it drain on its own. Make sure you do not touch one eye, then touch the other- make sure you also wash your hand after touching your eye. If compresses do not help and it gets worse, then you will need to see your doctor for an evaluation.

I've been having the problem for a few weeks. At times it has gotten more red and I used pink eye remedy eyedrops and the redness was greatly reduced but still remained at the edge of my contact. If it was a stye wouldn't it have developed by now?

Accepted Answer

XXXXXXXXXXXX,

If you have had it this long, then most likely this isn't due to a stye. Most likely then this is some type of infection, so you will need to see youir doctor for antibiotics since it has not cleared up. I would also not wear your contact lenses at all as they can harbor bacteria and can make infections worse. So sorry to say but you will need to use a different pair of lenses.
