Question
My six year old female cat has seemed to have developed a problem. She started out moving more slowly, then my other cat gave her an abcess in her rear end which had to be surgically repaired. After taking her antibiotics with pain meds she bounced back really quickly. Now 3 weeks later she can hardly walk and has now started loosing her appetite. I fear the worst, but my vet has drawn blood and doing a full work up at this time. I don't know what to expect, but needless to say, I'm a wreck and worried sick.
Can you give me any ideas besides waiting for the results tomorrow or Wed. Her heart, lung, are fine. She has lost 2 1/2 lbs in about 3 weeks. I am beside myself at this time.
Please advise...if there is any.
Sincerely,
XXXXX XXXXX

Optional Information
Pet's Sex: Female
Pet's Age: 6
Already Tried:
comfort drug from our vet. She will not hardly move and sometimes cries and grouls when I pick her up. This has gone on in only a week. She seemed to be slowing down, but I attributed it to age? After have her surgery 3 wks ago, she's gone down hill. At first, drinking and eating normal to loosing 2 1/2 lbs.
I went to our local vet on Saturday. She drew blood and mentioned it was hard to get her veins? I have heard nothing but compliment about our vet, so I have to feel she would tell me if she had suspected something rare. I will hear tomorrow or Wed on results.
I am just trying to prepare myself for what's ahead. I lost another kitty a year ago June. He developed a horrible problem. He had Chylothorax. It was hard to handle, but I never dreamed I'd be going through it again so soon.
Please help.
Sincerely
Joyce Meras

Hi,
I'm sorry your cat is so sick. If she is only 6 y.o., I wouldn't expect her to be slowing down yet.
My main concerns would be feline leukemia or feline AIDS, which can come from being bitten by infected cats. Either of these viruses can suppress the immune system, making it harder to fight infection. They can also cause some cancers that could affect a younger cat.
Hopefully your vet added these 2 tests to the bloodwork; if not it should be easy to call the lab and have them run.
I would also worry about hemobartonella (which is now called something else, I believe), which is a blood-borne parasite. It is transmitted by fleas and ticks and can be in a cat's system for a long time without causing problems. Stress (say, from a cat bite abscess) can cause the organisms to multiply and cause problems. These cats are very lethargic, anemic, and can have weight loss. Your vet will likely have a suspicion of this after seeing the complete bloodwork (if it shows anemia).
The fact that it was hard to get blood doesn't really indicate anything. Even healthy cats tend to have small, rolling veins and don't bleed very quickly!
Hope this helps a little. Please let me know what they find out.
