Question
I have an older model outboard (1993). Today when i was using the boat the trim was working perfectly, then all of a sudden the "trim up" just completely stopped working. When I got home, and tried to figure out the problem, i was confused. When i press the trim down, i can hear the trim motor working but when i press the trim up, i don't hear anything. no clicking or whining from the trim motor. Its completely quiet as if i'm not pressing anything at all. any suggestions?

According the the plate on the motor, the Model number is J115TLATS. I don't have any paperwork on the motor so I can't give a model name persay, but that is the model that is stamped on the motor. The motor is a 115 HP.

Answer
This is a 1993 Johnson 115. Is it the Quiet Rider Model?
In any event the trim relays are located in a junction box mounted on the engine.
there are two relays in the box, simply pull them out and switch them, if the trim now goes up but not down you have a bad relay. You can pick one up at any BRP Evinrude dealer.
Best of luck.

i should have mentioned that, I did in fact do that at the boat launch. It just went down even when i switched them. I don't know if its electrical or what, cause i also tried to jump it (the trim up) with screw drivers and still nothing.

Answer
It does sound like an electrical issue. Where exactly did you try to jump the leads?

I jumped them once i got home. Everything was dry and when i hit the two live ends it sparked, so im pretty sure it's getting some power to it.

Answer
which two live ends? The ones gpoing to the trim motor?
You supply graound to one and power to the other to test the motor. Then reverse the leads and it should run in the opposite direction. If the motor works this way, you have either a bad trim switch in the remote control or a harness issue with an open circuit somewhere.
You will need an ohm meter to check for continuity from the switch and the harness leads

yea i believe thats the ones i accidentally hit..im not too electrical savvy so i can't say for sure, it sparked. When i tried again to test it, the trim still didn't work. I guess i'll have to take it to a repair shop that can check the electrical end of it.
