Question

I have a 35 hp Mercury motor, I think from 1987. I noticed the other day that when I was idleing(sp?) no water was coming out of the tell tale. A little would sputter out every now and then. As I kept going at idle speed (no wake) smoke started to come out of the tell tale.

I was told that water will not always come out, but I was concerned due to the smoke. I immediately stopped the engine and proceeded w/ my trolling motor.

Later, when I could use my motor, I started it up and went about 1/2 of a full throttle and water proceeded to shoot out. When I was heading back in, in the no wake, I went to idle and water stopped spitting out. According to the user manual, if water does not shoot out of the tell tale in a steady stream you should turn it off immediately.

Is this normal?

I do not know the model since I am at work. I am going to hook it up to the hose when I get home to see if I can get water to come out.

Answer

Was it smoke or steam, you will probably need to replace your water pump impellor, you should get a steady stream out of the tell tale at all times, the tell tale does get clogged up from time to time, you can blow it out with compressed air.The steam from the tell tale,is normally an indicater that the motor is getting to hot, install new water pump impellor and let me know.

I think it was steam, but I was not sure.

how much is a new water pump impellor?

Also, wondering why it worked in almost full throttle, is that because going that fast will help the water flow?

Accepted Answer

The impellor cost about 20.00 USD,less Labor to install. The impeller sits in a housing in the lower unit, the housing is offset,at slower speed the impellor blades won't straighten out, water flow will help a little at the higher speeds, but it won't overcome a weak impellor for long.
