Hello,

There are two common causes of swollen lymph glands in dogs. One is infection. Usually the lymph glands closest to the site of infection will swell. With swelling of the glands in the neck, infection is likely to be present in the throat or in an abscessed tooth. If an infection is causing your dog's throat to be sore or swollen, that could cause coughing. Some infections are resistant to certain antibiotics, so if your vet diagnosed an infection, you may need to try a different antibiotic. If you have a rectal thermometer, you can check your dog's temperature. Normal temperature range is 100.5*F to 102.5*F. If your dog has a fever, infection is likely. Amoxicillin often helps with such infections, but it's possible that a form of bacteria that is resistant to it is responsible.

Lymphoma is the other common cause of swollen glands. It is a form of cancer. Lethargy and loss of appetite often accompany it. If the glands are swollen a great deal, it could put pressure on areas that would result in coughing. You can read more about swollen glands at this site:

You will need veterinary treatment for him regardless of whether your dog has an infection or lymphoma.
