Question

I have a bloodhound (planned pregnancy) that may be pregnant. She has colostrum, is much wider and has been constantly exposed to a male (only a year old). Sheis two and a half (we were waiting till she was two years old) and she has had a false pregnancy before. Her mammary glands did not get sooo enlarged though. I thought I might have felt puppies move...or maybe it was just bubbles? We are hoping, they are both champions (she is OFAed, he is preliminary tested), and I would have taken her to the vet for an ultrasound, but I figured the father was to young? I never saw him mount...he always did it wrong. What do you think?

Answer

Hello and thanks for researching this very important question...I'm sorry that no one online earlier felt qualified to discuss this with you!

Any male that is mature enough to accomplish a Mating Tie with a female must be assumed to be fertile. Younger males than this have been known to produce full-sized litters, and the average age of maturity in male dogs is around 6 months. Only one proper tie at the time of ovualtion is needed to fertilize the female.

Since female dog hormones are almost identical after a cycle whether pregnant or not, breast development and other signs are NOT reliable indicators of pregnancy.

To be completely sure what is happening, and to figure out what to do in regard to the female's health vis-a-vis labor and delivery, you should have her xrayed or ultrasounded ASAP to get an idea of how many pups (if any) are present. The vet will help you figure out her due dates.
