Question

I have a 2008 BMW 335xi with ~12,000 miles on it. The "Engine Malfunction. Reduce Power" light came on a few weeks ago. I brought it in for service . . . and two weeks later, it is still in the shop and the mechanics at BMW still can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I know they replaced two solenoid valves and have reprogrammed the computer, but that has not resolved the issue.

About 2 months ago, I received a letter from BMW indicating that the high pressure fuel pump was defective in some of the 2008 and 2009 335xi models. Is this likely the problem? And, if it is, why has this proven so elusive to the technicians? When they interrogate the car computer, it apparently is not registering a problem with the fuel pump

Already Tried:
Car has been at BMW for 2 weeks. They keep trying to diagnose the problem, but have not found any solutions yet. They have queried the onboard computer and sent this data to BMW North America. So far, this has led them on replace two solenoid valves and reprogram the computer, but this has not solved the Engine problem.

Accepted Answer

We have replaced a lot of high pressure pumps in my shop. But there are many reasons for the warning light to come on, when the high pressure pump fails it sets a specific fault so this is why it hasn't been replaced. I have heard of turbo problems so your vehicle may need new turbos. Make sure they have the local FSE (field service engineer) working on this.

What I have seen that gets results and speeds the process up in the repair is to call the service manager and complain about how long it is taken to fix the vehicle, then call the sales manager then call the general manager of the store by polite but explain how long it is taken to correct your issue and you want the vehicle your paying for back. I wouldn't call all of them at once space it out. Then call BMW NA and complain. Unfortunately the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Kenny,

How would you know if the car needed new turbos?

Answer

It sets a fault for it that can be diagnosised with a special tool. I am not saying it would need turbos just something I have seen a trend of lately.

Kenny,

Thank you very much. Last question . . . once the necessary repairs are made, can I expect to have a fully functioning car back, or will this car always be plagued with problems?

Answer

It would be fully functional for the most part this vehicles are fantastic with very few problems. And for the problems they do have are being resolved with very good results.
