Question

ABS, VSC TRAC and TRAC OFF lights just came on and stay on.
Brakes feel OK, no different than when lights were not on.
Lights came on a few days ago, then went off after one re-start.
Any clues?

Hi Peter,

Vehicle is 2004 Toyota SR5 4Runner 2WD 4.7 V-8 engine.

Check Engine light is NOT on.

Brakes feel OK. Did not try panic stop, but assume ABS is not working. Vehicle has 55,000 miles on it. Serviced according to the schedule by local dealer in Raleigh, NC.

Did this by chance start happening when you were driving in todays rain storm?

First time lights came on (yesterday) it had been raining, but lights did not come on right away. Only came on after we got home, the car had been setting for a while in the garage, noticed them when we went out on errands. Turned car off when we got to destination (about 2 miles), restarted car and the lights went out.

Today, it was raining on the way home from work, but lights stayed out during the drive home in the rain. Rain stopped. We parked the car in the garage. Then we went out to dinner, driving about 3 miles, lights did not come on. Lights came back on when we started the car in the restaurant parking lot to come home.

Crazy, eh?

Thank you for the reply.

Every time you start the truck the ABS system runs a complete "self check", you may have noticed the clunk noise you get when you start the truck and first start to move it. If the self check fails it shuts down the system and throws these lights. A few things can cause this. First be sure that your battery is fully charged and tests good, a weak battery or a battery with a bad cell can cause voltage fluctuations that will cause false ABS issues. If the battery is good then it's time for Fred Anderson or Leith to connect the scan tool and check to see what codes have set, I have seen a few issues with the ABS control units on these but that is rare.

OK, Peter. Sounds like a plan.

I have been thinking that the battery needs to be replaced, since it is OEM and 5 yrs old. The "eye" in the battery is very dim, but the car always starts with no indication of battery weakness. But your logic makes sense. Well worth $9 !!

I will replace the battery, then see what happens. If the lights persist, then I'll take it to Fred Anderson.

YOU DONE GOOD, son!!!!

Please accept my thanks!
