Question

I have just bought a bmw 3 series [o2 plate] diesel auto..On picking it up today and driving it home I put on the air-con and the cab filled up with what I assume to be diesel fumes, on arrival at home there was a light smoke coming off of the engine. I drove it again tonight without the air-con on and the fumes were limited in the cab but still smoke was in the engine, so I tried it one more time with all vents open air-con on and again it filled with light smoke and fumes..Please would you be able to advise, I've checked it in for a service tomorrow it has done 95,000 miles and has a very clean looking engine but then I'm no mechanic, please tell me I havn't bought a dud.. It sounds like you have an oil leak either from the rocker cover or turbocharger that is drpping onto your hot exhaust causing the smoke (smoke on left side of engine as you look at it) The moke is drawn through the heating system as that is were its air intake is, if you run the heaters in the re-circulate position this will stop the smoke from coming in.

 

Get the technician to look for the oil leak around the rocker cover and turbo area, if he cant find an external leak then the turbo condition requires checking. To find the leak all he has to do is follow the smoke and do a visual check.
