Question

I have a v6 4mo which I use to tow my caravan, when the car is put under load, eg up long hill at a good speed the car begins to smell of very hot rubber. When I first began towing I noticed this smell when under load but found that the 40amp spade fuse had gone. This had happened prior to me towing as I had experienced overheating when in queing traffic a few weeks previous. Since replacing the fuse the fan operates intermittantly when the engine is hot and maintains the temp. at 90 on the guage. When the hot rubber smell occurs the temp.on the gauge is still at 90. Any suggestions as to the route to resolve this? cheers, David.

Accepted Answer

Hi David

If the engine temperature is steady, and has not overheated, then I would look at the transmission, as this is only happening under load.

I would start by checking the quality of the oil, when it gets old, or hot, it does make a pungent rubbery smell.

The problem you have is that you have the 4x4 golf, which is a great car, but the X XXXXX XXXXX is a 60/40 split with a viscouse drive, and this is where the heat is being developed, and spread through the rest of the gearbox.

I would recommend renewing the oil to start with, with a synthetic type oil rather than a mineral oil, this will stand the heat a lot better.

Hope this helps

Regards

Thanks Trevor, I had the Haldex oil changed at the last service, I will look to getting the gear box oil changed to see if this resolves the problem.

cheers,
