Hi,

Dogs that drink a great deal of water have a condition called Polydipsia, it is a medical term simply used for increased thirst in dogs. The most common cause of Polydipsia is diabetes but there are other causes as well such as Kidney failure, Uterine infection, Liver disease, High blood calcium, and Abnormalities of the pituitary gland among other problems.

Dogs normally take in about 3 to 4 cups of water per day for a 20 pound dog. Anything more than that, under normal environmental conditions, is considered polydipsia.

The occurrence of polydipsia usually does not constitute an emergency, but several potentially serious diseases (such as diabetes mellitus, kidney failure, liver failure or high blood calcium caused by a malignancy) may be the underlying cause of the symptoms.

I would recommend calling the vet to see if they can set up a examination for today since she is also lethargic as this is a very serious sign. Anytime your dog is lethargic it is deemed a emergency.
