Question

Have a problem upgrading my personal homepage using Dreamweaver.

Once I have upgraded the "local view" and saved it in the "remote view", when I preview it in the browser the new updated version appears -- however as an FTP ...

However, when I try to open my personal webpage directly in Firefox or Explorer the old version remains.

What am I doing wrong?

Answer

Hi jos...if it is appearing as a FTP page, then there is something wrong with the index.htm file (or it is missing). If the old version remains take a look at your settings....

In dreamweaver when you are connected to the remote host you can do 2 things...

1) Perform a sync and put newer files to REMOTE or

2) upload the entire site again....

Since you are having problems, I would reconnect to the remote server, makre sure your remote files show o nthe left side and your local are on the right, click on the top folder of your LOCAL files, and upload the ENTIRE SITE again. When it ask do you want to put dependant files, tell it YES...

That should do it...(be sure to refresh you IE / Firefox page when you view it for the first time, they cache...)

I followed your recommendations ... but still my "old data" appears on my webpage.
I also received a message regarding some SWF objects.

Any further suggestions.

Answer

And you have refreshed your browser?? If so, verify your LOCAL copy. If there is no problem with the push and it is going to the right directory, then the wrng files are being pushed up....

What you can also check is see if your web hosting service is performing maintenance on the server...you can be looking at their backup server now...

Still working on the issue. Currently I am on the telephone with GLOBAT to see if there is any problem on their end.

BTW I realized that you are also in Virginia. I teach at George Mason University.

Will get back to you soon.,

I am frustrated )-:

GLOBAT people promised to "look at the problem" ... but apparently the issue has not yet been resolved.

I have also ensure that all updated local files are in the remote site ... but when I open my webpage directly from Firefox or Explorer ... the old page pops up.

Any further suggestions?

Answer

If you know that your local files (which are the ones you want) have been pushed to the remote server in the correct folder (usually the public_html folder, but this may change), and you verify they are thre with no erros by checking the modification date on the two files, then you have done all you can do. It must reside on their end. I've been pushing sites since Dreamweaver came out, and there is not much that you can do wrong...

Unfortunately, my problem has not Cry been solved. God knows what the issues that are not allowing me "publish" my updates to are!

Perhaps, --I do not know anything about programming and very little about Dreamweaver-- it may have to do with FTP issues and the fact that in my host file there appear to be duplicates.

Any suggestions?

Accepted Answer

OK, let see, the steps when it goes to publish are as follows:

1) Your web hosting company should have given you a FTP address to publish to

2) They should have told you the folder to save it in

3) You should have your username and password..

So, in your site?Manage sites, Edit your Remote Server info...

Make sure the Ftp site is correct

make sure the publishing folder is there. (usually public_html)

Username and password are correct

After that, click on TEST. You should connect to your site just fine. If so, you should be able to publish.

I think what is wrong is your files are NOT being published to the right folder. You may have to call your web hosting service and see what folder all of your files should be in.

If they are not in the right one, then the user will never see them, since they only have rights to a particular path....
