Info Request

Hello,

Is this area closer to the neck on the chest or closer to the stomach area?

Are you sure this is a female?

I would say more in the middle but if I have to pick one maybe closer to the neck and yes I'm at least 80% sure it's a girl

Answer

Hi,

The reason I asked these specific questions is Dwarf hamsters have scent glands located about midway underneath the neck and before the stomach area. These glands can become very irritated and even abscessed. At this point a Vet visit should be done to evaluate this area and make sure it is not a tumor. Hamster are prone to tumors as well as abscesses. I do suggest you make sure to have a vet see the hamster that is familiar with Pocket Pets, as the hamsters are sensitive to medications and need someone with experience to properly diagnose them. What would you do for an abscess I only paid $20. for the hamster and can't really afford a vet visit

Answer

Hi,

You can try some warm compresses on the hamster for now, to see if it helps take the area down. Since you recently purchased the Hamster, you may want to see if the Pet shop has a Vet and have them treat the hamster. Unfortunately without seeing the area, it is impossible to know what it is. The worst problem is the Pet shops sell these Hamsters and many times there is inbreeding leaving the hamsters susceptible

to illness and medical problems. I do understand how hard it is to pay for a vet visit when you did pay much for the hamster, but it may be the only recourse unless you can get the Pet shop to have a Vet see it. Joan

Hi,

I wish I could give you a more definitive answer. Unfortunately Hamsters have such a short life span and have been so inbred we see this often. I hope it all works out for your little one! Joan
