Question

My tonkinese cat (male, 4) wonderes into peoples houses, sleeps on their beds or cars, and generally annoys the hell out of some and scares the rest. What should I do? I had a very upset neighbour on my doorstep late last night after the cat ran riot through their house.

General deterrents like loud noises, making the cat unwelcome etc. But as it is not me he is affecting I am not too sure. I want to try and put a stop to it before someone harms him!

Accepted Answer

There's only one way to stop this: your cat cannot be let outside, and be kept as an indoor-only cat, or you can let him enjoy the outdoors, but curb his roaming by only allowing him to remain outside on your property. If you can build a cat run or enclosure leading from your back door directly into it, your cat will be able to enjoy the outdoors, but be safe from roaming. If he is not neutered, having this done will also curb his roaming instinct.

Not only may someone harm him, but if he is 'allowed' to run free and anger your neighbors/possibly ruin their property, they will take legal action to either force you to keep him inside, or call animal control and have him taken away from you.

You can't let him out without your supervision (you could get him used to walking on a harness and leash), only allow him in an enclosed run, or keep him inside at all times. It's in his best interest and so he's not taken away.

I wish you much good luck!
