Info Request

Hello,

Are you looking for a small toy breed or a large breed?

Do you have children or children come over often?

How much time do you have to be at home with the dog?

Would you like a more active dog, or a less active dog?

The reason I am asking is we want to find the perfect breed for you as in litter training as well as what would fit best for you.

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for the additional information, finding the right breed for the right living conditions and owner is the best thing you can do. The good news is there are several small breed dogs which are easy to litter box train and are more calm and sedate for apartment living.

The toy poodle is one of the easier dogs to litter box train, and they tend to be less hyper then other small breeds. The toy poodle is always eager to please and makes friends easily though they do need time with strangers so be prepared for some shyness when the toy poodle makes friends.

The pug is also a very easy dog to train to litter boxes but the downside is you will have to be careful and select a no dust litter as the dust from litter boxes can cause upper respiratory infections in these dogs. They are not your typical barkers, but are more active then most small breeds. Though not nearly as active as a large breed dog the pug would do well in apartment living.

The Chihuahua also does well with litter box training. They are not super active in fact most prefer to be your standard lap dog. Now the Chihuahua does train better on puppy pads then litter boxes. (These are pads you place down for the dog to use) but they also do well with litter boxes. The downside is the chihuahua tends to be a yappy dog so some training on barking will need to be used if you choose this breed.

Hello,

A Havaton is difficult to train in any procedure including litter box training, but it can be done if you really like this breed.

American Eskimo is a good breed of course the toy would be your best bet. The Boston Terrier is also a good breed for training. The Chinese Crested is another good choice, the hairless breed would be good for your husbands allergies as well.

The Havanese is also a wonderful choice, these dogs are especially easy to train and are used in circuses due to the ease of training them. As for the litter box this would be a simple feat for this dog. The West Highland White Terrier is also a VERY trainable dog for litter box training. Very friendly, low activity level and all around good personality.

As for designer dogs, I can not recommend one as the fact is you have two separate behavior patterns of dogs and one may interfere with the other causing a problem. If you are looking for a easy to train dog then you are better off sticking to full blooded dogs as they tend to follow a pattern in the breed unlike designer dogs which tend to follow new patterns.
