Question

My cat Jake is snorting a lot a green mucus out of his nose and I am seeing a little blood. He is having trouble breathing through his nose and it is affecting his appetite. Is there something I can give him to clear it up? Thank you.

Hi Sue,

How old is your cat?

When did this start?

Has this ever happened before?

Hi. Jake is approximately 12 years old. I am not sure exactly. His problem started about 2 weeks ago. He has sneezed a lot at certain times like he might have allergies but it has never been this bad before.

Hi there,

With your history, I have several possible causes:

Infection (Rhinitis)
- Bacterial
- Fungal
- Viral (Feline Upper Respiratory Infection)

Also possible, but with out an examination I can not be sure:
- Foreign object such as grass or a grass awn in the nose, causing inflammation, sneezing, and blood.
- Cancer - A growth/mass/tumor

To start, I would recommend you make an appointment with your veterinarian. Certain tests may be recommended such as bloodwork and x-rays and my suspicion is that (from your history) antibiotics may be warranted.

Until you are able to see your veterinarian, here are some options to help decrease the mucous and make your cat feel better:

One recommendation is saline drops to use to moisten and flush the nose. Although I am not promoting this company or brand, this is one that I have used in the past:

The other recommendation would be humidification. You can either use a children's / baby's humidifier for 10-15 minutes twice daily, or using the steam from a hot shower you can attempt to humidify the air that your cat breathes.

I hope this information and links above help! Please let me know if you have more questions!

Thank you for your help and information. I will make an appointment for Jake. In the meantime, I will try the saline to make him more comfortable. I don't even know your first name so I can only just say thank you for taking the time and helping Jake. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
