Question

I walked my puppy tonight on our way back she had a bowwel movement, it appeared to be looser then normal. About ten minutes later we had stopped at my daughters for a few minutes and I noticed she was frothing at the mouth. I picked her up to wipe it off and felt that her tummy was girgling. Within a minute she began to throw up-lots. I carried her home and she has thrown up 3 more times and has now just had severe diahrea and is drowling lot's. Up until an hour ago when this started she seemed fine. Her shots are all up to date and was with other dogs earlier that are all immunized up to date. The only thing I suspect she could have had was a little bit of bran I added to my older dogs food as she was a little costipated today. Other that we had walked to the lake a she had a lic of the water. She is just 9 month's old. A purebred Pomeranian. Is there something I can give her? I tried to give her a litle pepto bismol. She didn't like it and it didn't help. 11:25 pm

Answer

Hi Valerie,

I'm sorry to hear your puppy is not feeling well.

If she had a little of the bran you added to your older dog's food and drank some of the lake water, this might, indeed be the cause of her upset intestinal system. However, it's also possible that she ingested a toxic substance or other non-food item when she was out of your sight, at the lake, in the house, outside, etc., and this is of the most concern.

It's difficult to give a dog any oral medication to stop the symptoms of vomiting, because she's vomiting, so it's important that you bring her to the vet, as soon as possible, for evaluation and treatment, especially if she's exhibiting symptoms of lethargy and excessive drooling. If it's after hours for your regular vet, now, you can bring her to an ER vet center in your area. The vet will give her an injection of anti-emetic, to stop the vomiting, and also run some tests on her blood and stool, looking for any intestinal parasites or toxins which may be causing her symptoms.

For the moment, you can offer her an ice cube to lick, and do not offer her any food.

I hope she's feeling much better, as soon as she's treated by the vet!

I am way out in the country and I don't know where there is an emergency vet. I am so upset, I lost a solemate pom. in Feb. after a terrible few month's of watching him go thru hell with a heart murmur that eventually took him from me. I am beside myself. Is there anything else you can sugest I do until morning when I can find a vet?

Answer

Hi again,

I'm so sorry to hear this sad news about your other Pom; my condolences.

See if she'll keep down some toasted bread and also, if you have any dramamine or benadryl in the house, that might curb the nausea. You can see dosage instructions and side effects, below:

My daughter has bonamine 25mg. A milder dose of dramamine, will this do? How much should I give her if it is okay. She is a purebred but lg. for the breed I would guess her to be 12lbs.

Answer

Hi again,

For dogs, a common dose is 25 mg per dog once daily. Because she's only about 12 lbs., and a small breed, I'd give her 12.5 (1/2 of a 25mg. tablet). Make sure to tell the vet you've given this, and at what time, when she's seen tomorrow.

Are you still with me? She has accepted a few pieces of toasted bread. I do not even have an ice cube to offer her. Maybe if she can have this medicine she will settle for the night. Thank you for your help. I am an emotional wreck and you have helped me to get through the night!

Accepted Answer

Hi again,

I had signed off, but I'm back. You're very welcome, I do hope she will keep the medicine down and it will help settle the nausea until she can see the vet. If she ate a few pieces of toasted bread, and didn't vomit them up, that's good.

I'm glad I could be of help, and hope she'll be fine!

Cher
