Question

My EU3000 stopped taking a load last week. It runs but when any appliance is plugged into it, it starts to shudder like it wants to shut down. Before it would rev up but now it wants to quit. It is only 6 months old. The Oil level is good. The fuse is good. really dissapointed in it to be honest. What do you think is wrong? Pat in LA

Answer

If it runs okay under no load, the problem is a performance issue with either the fuel system(most likely) the ignition system (weak, but present spark) or a compression issue due to out of adjustment valves. Before diagnosing and repairing the generator, keep in mind this unit comes with a 3 year consumer warranty and should be able to be repaired by a honda generator dealer as long as the problem is not bad gas. If you want to procede, remove the air filter, and spray a slight mist of carb cleaner into the air intake when the engine is falling on it's face. The extra fuel should make the engine run better if the problem is not enough gas getting through the carburetor. Let me know how you make out.

I actually considered bad gas issue and planned on emptying the tank and usung new gas. Bad valves on a 8 month old generator that ran perfectly up until last Saturday seems strange to me. Sorry, but i tried the carb cleaner yesterday but the issue isn't that it doesnt run at all. i t just doesnt spike up when I plug even something small into the outlet. It trips the transfer relay switch on my catering truck and every few seconds it makes a clicking noise. But when I plug into the bypass(which is where the generator is plugged into) from my house electrical supply the relay acts normal. It is ONLY when I plug in the Honda and it is because the Honda is almost failing and not reving up like it normally does.
