Question

We just brought a new hamster to our cage. We did all the pre-requisites before joining them. They have been together for two days. Today we came home and the two of them were in the tube one ontop of the other. After opening the tube the top one was completely fine, the one on bottom is shaking, eyes closed and moving very jaggedly. Not her normal self. After examining her I found no lacerations but her fur around her neck and face is wet. The skin seems sensitive.   We believe that they are both females but the behavior does not seem conclusive. They are Dwarf Hamsters. Please help!!!

Hello,

You were wise to separate the hamsters. Sometimes even when you do everything right, some hamsters simply do not get along. They may have to be kept apart permanently. While dwarf hamsters are social, they usually do best with another hamster they have grown up with. If you want to, you can try to introduce the hamsters again after the one recovers. I wouldn't leave them unsupervised until you're sure they will get along. Some squabbling for dominance is normal, but finding a hamster in the condition you described isn't.

If the hamster still seems shaky and weak, you can help her by giving her some Pedialyte (made for human infants and available in discount stores and pharmacies). Give her a couple of drops every ten minutes for the first hour. After that, give the drops once per hour until you go to bed. If you have some honey or syrup, you can also give the hamster a few drops of that. She may lick it off your finger.

It's possible for internal injuries to occur when hamsters fight. If that's the case, your hamster may not respond to the first aid measures I've given. However, there's nothing you can do for internal injuries. I hope there are none.
