Question

Hi: I have an unimunized Barn Tom cat. It does fight with stray tom cats. It is a friendly cat and not exibiting anything unusual, except it did have a fight with a stray Tom cat two nights ago and did get a bit beat up. Last night he accidentally tried to bite me when He was with me in the garden. He did break the skin though just barely. My question is should I be worried about Rabies?

Hello,

If your cat has never been vaccinated, yes, Rabies could be of concern for you and for him, although it's good that he's not exhibiting any symptoms right now.

Cat bites (and scratches) carry lots of bacteria, so it would be a good idea for you to have your wound looked at by your personal physician and it might be recommended that you get a tetanus shot and start a round of antibiotics.

If your cat interacts/fights with other strays, it's very important that you have him vaccinated, as most serious feline communicable diseases are spread through cat bites and scratches. Having him neutered will also be healthier for him and lessen his roaming and fighting activities.

I hope all will be well with your furry boy and your wound.
