Question

We are doing a kitchen update and will be replacing the vented hood above our stove top with a Whirlpool microwave vented set up. Our remodelers covered over the old opening for the vented hood and told us the new microwaves have a charcoal filter and recirculate air instead of venting to the outside. My husband and I are trying to decide if this is the best move. I am a chemistry teacher and would not want my fume hood at school to just recirculate and not vent to the outside. Our remodeler will be unhappy if they have to go back and cut a hole to once again vent to the outside. Do you have a definitive answer as to which is best (vent to the outside or not) or does it really matter?

Sincerely,

Rebecca and Dorsey Plunk

Hi Rebecca & Dorsey
We specialize in Kitchen remodeling. We have done many Kitchens with venting microwaves. There is absolutely no doubt that a vented kitchen exhaust fan is VASTLY superior to a re-circulating fan with a charcoal filter. Yes vented fans are more work for the remodeler but the only time a charcoal filter is acceptable is when there is no option to vent outside which does not appear to be the case in your situation. You will lose space in the cabinet above the microwave unless the microwave is up against an outside wall.
