Question

I am a dog rescuer. I've just had a dog neutered, and his scrotum is swollen quite large for his size (8 ilb miniature pincher), and is oozing bright red blood steadily. Since I'm part of a rescue network, we had the neuter done at the city Animal Care and Control. He was bleeding a little when we were still there, but they released him to us since overnight in the ACC with no vet is the same at the shelter with no vet. The dog is lethargic, but is that the normal post-op lethargy or something more severe. Please help!!!

The vet tech at the ACC suggested warm compresses. I've done warm, and now I'm just holding a dry compress to his scrotum to try to keep the bleeding under control.

Hello,

This is Dr. Christian. Welcome to JustAnswer. It is fairly common for a mature male dog to have some post-operative bleeding into the scrotum because of the increased blood vessels in the area compared to a younger dog. The best option is actually cold compresses because the cold causes the blood vessels to constrict and can help close bleeders. The warm compress actually causes the blood vessels to dilate and worsen the problem. As long as you keep the area clean and his gums are nice and pink then he'll probably be just fine. I would recommend having it checked in the morning by a vet as soon as you can. In some cases the amount of blood in the scrotum can lead to infection or other problems but those won't be of concern tonight. If you have more questions please let me know.

The incision site has finally begun to clot. I'm less panicky now, thank you. I'll probably bring him right back to the ACC in the morning, but I'm glad that he'll be okay through the night. Thank you so much.
