Question

I am a small screen printing business and Back in Nov 2008 I purchased a new printer. With the economy the way it is I am not able to make my monthly payment and have been trying to sell for the past 3 months with no luck. If I let this go and send to the bank, I guess like a repo what will that do to my credit? And being a small business will this affect mine and my husbands credit?

Answer

If the loan is personally signed for by you it will adversely affect your credit. If you were not personally responsible for the debt, only the corporation's credit will be adversely affected. I suggest you meet with your bank and see if the loan can be restructured to make the payments more manageable until your business picks up.

How will it affect my credit

Answer

I assume from your reply that you and your husband personally are liable on the debt. It will be a derogatory mark on your credit unless the bank is willing to accept back the printer in full settlement of the debt and will not report adversely on your credit. The fact that a voluntary repossession occurred will be reflected on your credit.

yes, my husband and I are personally liable for the debt...is a voluntary repo better than involuntary and how so?

Accepted Answer

The voluntary repossession gives you the opportunity to try to work out an arrangement if there is a deficiency so that the debt is not paid in full. It also gives you an opportunity to see if the bank will not report adversely on your credit report especially if the voluntary repossession is done in conjunction with a restructuring of the loan to permit any remaining balance to be paid in a manner you can handle.
