Hello. Thanks for writing in. A platelet count that low is certainly dangerous. Low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) usually occur due to decreased production, increased sequestration (by spleen or liver), increased use or increased destruction. Infectious agents, particularly rickettsial diseases (tick borne infections), are very common. I would have her checked for ehrlichiosis and rocky mountain spotted fever. Immune mediated causes (body reacts against itself) are also very common, and can happen in the bone marrow or in the blood stream. If there was a severe inflammatory disease occurring, she could have developed a condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). In this scenerio, the body uses all the platelets to repair damage to the blood vessels due to severe inflammation. An autoimmune profile and coagulation panel should be ran as well. If the coagulation panel is abnormal, I would be concerned about her getting into rat poison as well. All of times, it is difficult to find the inciting factor that caused the thrombocytopenia. For that reason, all cases should be on prednisone, doxycycline and vitamin K. Those medications tend to cover a lot of these disease processes. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

I am sorry, I am not familiar with that particular brand name. I can't find it on a search either. Is that the correct spelling? Do you know the generic name of the drug?
