Question

I have a two year old cat that has had three episodes of her paw swelling. She has had lengthy stays at our vets - one week and then two weeks ago for five days. They found she had an infection and a temperature with some dehydration. The infection responded to a long acting injected antibiotic plus compresses. We took her home four days ago after the last stay and this morning I see her paw beginning to swell again. The other problem is, this cat was a rescue and doesn't take kindly to anyone trying to give her a pill or whatever - just getting her into a carrier is an all day affair. My vet has a compounding pharmacy and I'm going to ask him if there is any antibiotic we can either spray that will work transdermally or what method we can use to get antibiotics into her. $2000 later we still don't have any answers. Can you provide any insite?

Thanks

Sandy Strick

Already Tried:
Vet has treated with with a long acting injectable antibiotic (supposed to last two weeks) ompresses and fluids.    They did find a puncture in her pad but claim it can't be a cyst or tumor because of her young age.

Hi Sandy,

May God bless you for rescuing her!

Has she been tested for hemobartonella, tetanus, feline diseases, staph, parasites, etc?

Where does the paw swell, pads, flesh, bone other?

Thanks,

Terri

Teri . so sorry for this late reply ... it was almost midnite here in Caifornia and I fell asleep!! Anyway, I will ask the vet if she has been tested for all of te above. The first time her paw swelled it was the paw and up to the firs joint of the leg. After treatment, the swellingis contained now to just the paw and pad and stops at the top of the paw and not the leg. According to my vet,she has been tested for a multitude of infections and they can find nothing exotic .. but this time I am going to have them go deeper into the problem or get her to a specialist.

Dear Sandy,

I am sorry you are having trouble with a kitty you were so kind to rescue.

A puncture wound can allow a multitude of bacterium to enter. This includes worms:

Tetanus is also possible.

A tick bite can lead to Lymes and other ailments.

Arthritis is also possible.

Any medication can be compounded into a trasdermal form that can be applied to her ear or she can receive covenia by injection every two weeks.

Soak the paw in warm water and Epsom salts three times a day.

If this swelling continues I agree you should see an ortho vet.

Please let me know how she is doing.

I hope all will be well.

Many blessings to both of you,

Terri
