Question

I would like to extend my driveway into the side of my yard and put up a fence in the back. I contacted the permit office and they have no clue as to the property lines or how far away I need to be from the property line. Where would I find this information? I live in Cherry Creek Subdivision on the west side of Columbus, Ohio. Any info is very much appreciated. Thanks, Barb

To do this project properly, you need to hire a local surveyor and have him do a boundary survey on your property. The surveyor can plot where your new driveway and fence will be located on the property. This survey should then be submitted to the building department for approval along with your permit application.

It is worth the extra money to be sure that you have located the driveway and fence in the allowable areas. There are easements and setbacks to consider as well. These will often vary from street to street in a city as well. If you build into an easement or setback you may have to eventually tear the structures out and relocate.

Feel free to post any follow-up questions you may have.
