Question

My Acer laptop screen was faulty, so I removed the harddrive, and installed the harddrive in an external USB device, but I cannot access the Desktop (items) for one of the users (suspect because user has password), how do I gain access?

Hi,

I think the problem you atre facing due to ownership of the filesystem

It is possible to take the ownership of a file/ folder using the following procedure if you are using Windows XP Professional

Please click Start-> Control Panel -> Folder Options

Click on View tab

Uncheck the checkbox Use simple file sharing (at the bottom of the list)

Click Apply and Ok

Right-click the drive that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.

Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).

Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

In the Name list, click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK.

When done, try to access the files and let me know.

If you are using Windows XP Home edition, you need to use the above steps after starting the computer in safe mode

Thanks

I have acce3ss to the drive, and can see all the files, but when i try to access one user under the docs and settings, I get the message access denied, the user name displays as name.PRIVATE-NAME. I am trying to access the desktop items of the user, as I unfortunately saved everything to the desktop rather than using proper file saving.

Yes the above procedure will be applicable to you.

First change the ownership using the steps.

After that you will be able to access that particular user's desktop

Let me know

No, still get " name is XXX XXXXXXXXXX access is denied" after completing steps, when I hold pointer over folder, message reads floder is empty, all other user folders have data, and I have fullm access, this user not. There are 3 folders relating to this user 1. Name, 2. Name.PRIVATE-NAME, 3. NAME~1~PRI. I can access no's 1 and 3, but not 2. Is there different place for desktop items?

Info Request

The location of Desktop folder is :

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop

where, you need to replace the C: with the drive letter of your external drive

username is the name of the user

Please make sure that Show all files is enabled in Folder Option View tab

Also, try a Search from Start-> Search-> Files and Folders

Click All files and folders

Type the folder name

Under Look in, make sure that the external drive is selected

Click on More advanced options and click the first three checkboxes

Now click on Search and see if it finds the files

There is one more option.

If only the screen is faulty with your Acer laptop and the rest of the system is working, then connect the drive to the laptop

Connect an external monitor to the VGA output

Turn on the system and press Fn + F5 to switch the display to external monitor

It finds the folder under no 1 above, but it is empty.

Accepted Answer

In that case the filesystem may got corrupted.

You can try a data recovery software to search for lost files.

Download Restoration (Free) from the following link

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

Run it. Select your external drive and look for any deleted files.

However if it fails too, please let me know I will opt out to see if other experts can provide a different solution.
