Question

We have a 2002 Range Rover. The air conditioner stops working after about 15-20 minutes. We live in Tokyo so this is in fairly warm weather. The shop is saying that we need to buy a new condenser fan for $2000. It feels to me like it could be something much simpler. Fort example I found a post at http://www.rangerovers.net/newrremedies.htm#airconditioning suggesting that is might be a malfunctioning 3-way pressure switch.

Hello and thank you for using JA.

The posting you found could be right, and the mechanics information gave you is more likely right, but not 100% sure, so I'd like to recommend you to eliminate some of the confusion in our head, since the condenser fan is very easy to test, I'd like to you to give it a shot, the condenser fan is located in behind the front grill of the car, you should see a fan installed facing the cooling fin of the radiator, it may seem like a radiator to you but its not, once you located the condenser fan, follow the wire that came out of the center of the fan, you should see a connector, remove the connector, then grab a pair of wire that is long enough to reach the battery and the fan connector, strip all four ends of the sire and install two end to the battery temporarily, then probe the connecting pin of the fan, do not worry about the positive and negative, the fan don't have a reverse polarity, it will only reverse the turn of the fan but will not damage anything if power is feed is reverse. If the fan turn when you do this, then the problem is not the condenser fan, if the fan did not move at all, then the motor of the fan is bad. If that is the case, I advice you not to pay $2k us dollar to replace this unit, I recommend you to brows the web and find some online auto parts, you may find some New dealer, and some Use parts Dealer, its your choise what every you prefer to buy, just make sure they can ship international, and by experience, its easy to find that will ship where ever you are specially Range Rover.
