Question

My daughter had her rabbit neutered and afterward the vet said she was overactive and developed a fluid pocket. She told her to keep the rabbit in her travel cage for a week to minimize her movement and to use hot compresses on the area. It has been a week and the fluid pocket is the same size. Can this be drained and is it dangerous for the rabbit?

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXXXXXX.

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet I can tell you the following, there would be two possibilities here :

1. The rabbit has a seroma, this is a collection of fluid under the skin following surgery. This is usually not a serious situation, it can be drained very easily and given a further week or so would reduce in size and sort itself out anyway.

2. This could be a hernia of the abdominal muscles following the spay operation, this can produce a similar picture but is much more serious and often the muscles would need to be re-stitched.

3. In this sort of situation it would be best not to take chances so you should have the vet check the rabbit over again.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.
