Question

I own a 525i 2002 with the sport package. My air conditioner stopped blowing cold air yesterday. This is after I had just spent more than $3000 in repairs at a dealer. I was told that the dual fan in the front part of engine has 2 purposes one is to help cool the engine and the other is to help cool the additional heat that is generated when the A/C is running , the fan in my car I was told was faulty the cost of the reair was going to be $842. I asked if it was critical to driving the vehicle and was told no. At that point the A/c was working. What gives? Am I being ripped off ? The car has 101000 miles and have never really had any issues with it till now. What else could have caused the A/C to fail

Just relying what the dealer is telling me. I cannot understand how so many things could go wrong at once. The car has operated flawlessly since I own it. Very reliable

Answer

This is a common failure worldwide and BMW carried out a global recall free of charge, I would ask your local main dealership if your car has had this done, if not get them to do it free of charge. If it has been done it will carry a two year parts warranty so should get fixed free of charge.

The A/C has its own radiator that has to be cooled by it's own fan.

OK but will BMW do this even though it is a 2002 MOdel I know it has never been done

Answer

BMW honor all recalls on any age of car and as this has been a world wide recall for the 5series E39.

It might need a call from the dealership warranty admin person to BMW customer services dept.

Remember the dealership would prefer to charge retail rates instead of warranty rates so be persistant.

The fans are readly avaiable from aftermarket suppliers and take about 2-3 hours to fit.

Fit as follows

Remove both front lights

Remove front bumber skin

Remove front panel

Remove fan housing

Refit in reverse order

One Last thing is thia the reason that the a/c stopped working because of the faulty fan

Accepted Answer

Yes

If the fan does not work the A/C condensor (radiator) overheats, to protect the compressor from damage from overheated gases the ECU stops the A/C from working.

Once you have replaced your fan the system will operate correctly.
