I have a tohatsu 40 hp outboard. with trim and tilt. The trim gauge stopped working and the alarm sounds when the motor is placed in forward or reverse. No alerm in neutral.

i believe that motor has a trim alarm like the hondas have that will sound the buzzer if the motor is trimmed to high when trying to run in gear, it relies on the trim indicator and sending unit circuit to function properly, and what usually happens is the trim sending unit arm gets sticky or stuck and doesnt read anymore. trim the motor all the way up and look on the right side brkt for a little black arm and see if it moves, if its stuck spray some lubericant on it and work it with you hands to see if it frees up(also when your moving it check to see if the guage works as well) if the guage will read as you move it but the sender doesn't free up it will need to be replaced.
