Question

I have a 2004 BMW 330XI with 135K miles on it. I love the car but I am having a problem with the oil consumption.

I am putting in 2 quarts of synthetic oil every 2K miles...no visable signs of leaking oil.

I have been putting in synthetic oil every 2k miles...oil light comes on and its down 2 quarts.

Seems to be several complaints about this. Called dealership and they were not able to give me any idea, just told me to do oil consumption test.

Answer

There could be a few possibilities here. First thing I would do is remove all the oil and replace with regular castrol 10W40 run this for 3000 miles and then go back to a MOBILE 1 0-W40 synthetic oil. It could be the engine never got broken in properly and the piston rings to fully seat & seal the cylinder walls against oil blow-by. This may take care of the problem. If you are still having problems then I would recommend having a compression test done and verify that the piston rings are indeed okay. You may also add a container of LUCUS oil stabilizer to the synthetic oil this helps. Thank you!

Accepted Answer

This is the best place to start if they is not any oil leaks or burning then its very possible it could be with the rings. Now the next place to start is with the PCV system as this can cause similiar issues and is known on these cars. But before I would do the oil change this has worked for me on these higher end cars. I buy used BMW cars here and there with mechanical problems people think its time for a new engine and I just change the oil with regular oil then I use a Full synthetic oil with a container of lucus most of the time the car is like new. Let me know if you have any questions.. Thanks
