Info Request

Hello,

This is Dr. Christian. Welcome to JustAnswer. A few questions will help me get a clearer picture of this situation:

  • How long ago was the first puppy born?
  • Is she trying to push at all?
  • Is this her first litter?

Answer

By my count that means she had her puppy about 15 minutes ago (correct me if that's wrong) so in this case don't worry. It may take another 45 minutes to an hour to have one. The second will typically be easier since the first was so big. Here's a link about birthing in dogs to help:

Answer

Ahh, now things are clearer. She certainly should have been trying to produce another puppy by now. It is possible that she has uterine inertia (basically a tired uterus) that is unable to push another puppy out. If the puppy is in her body too long it could cause serious problems. I think it best that she be seen immediately. A vet can examine her for more puppies by palpating her abdomen and even do an x-ray if necessary. If she has another puppy then medications can be given to help things along. If there is not another puppy then all is well. If you have more questions please let me know.

how long is it usually between pups? my friends dog went 6 hours between the first and second. how can you tell if she has finished

Accepted Answer

There's no way to know she's truly finished unless she's stopped for several days and doesn't appear ill. A puppy that remains in the uterus causes severe infection and illness after several days. Otherwise there is no way to know for sure without an x-ray or exam. It is possible to go 6 hours between puppies but that is very unsual and the fact that she isn't even trying is also concerning. If she were at least trying then it would be a positive sign.
