Question

i am putting up hardwood (sapele) on the wall around the fireplace..i have 15 boards of varing widths. do i need to bevel the edges of the wood for any reason other than looks...or would it look better with an eased bevel or mabey no bevel at all...this is all new to me so i'm still learning

The beveled edge does serve a purpose in that it hides some irregularities, such as irregular plank heights. An eased edge would be effective at hiding minor irregularities.

If your wall surface is not a nice level, smooth surface then a beveled edge is the way to go. I personally like the visual appeal of a beveled edge compared to a square edge.

If you think that you will have some excess wood the bevel a couple pieces and hold them up next to each other. Do the same with the boards at a square edge. This will give you a feel as to what you think looks best with the decor of the room.
