Question

I have a sheltie who is scratching and biting herself all over. Her skin is red and raw and she is pulling out her hair. Her belly and back legs have very little hair. Is there anything I can give her to help.

Accepted Answer

Thanks for the information. Usually, skin problems and hairloss around the rear end is a flea problem. I would highly suspect that is the issue here. Flea shampoo does not work for controlling fleas. It may kill most of the fleas on application, but it has no residual effect. She needs to be on a good monthly flea preventative from your vet every month. With that being said, you can't completely eliminate the possibility of a skin mite infection, bacterial/yeast infection or ringworm (usually not itchy). I would definitely have your vet check out the area. Depending on what they find, they might want to run a skin scraping, skin impression and a ringworm culture, but I have a feeling they may find evidence of fleas. Antibiotics may be indicated if there is a secondary bacterial infection present. Dogs usually don't develop allergies so early, but it is possible. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

Answer

BTW. If it is demodex mites, which is common in puppies, hydrocortisone may make it worse.
