Question

something (don't know what) happened to my dog's nose. she is a shiba inu-mini pinscher mix. the top of her nose has become inflamed and she has bumps that are bloody in parts. at first i thought she scraped her nose, but it looks like she's having a reaction and the blood is erupting from below. her energy is normal, but she scratches at the bumps with her dew claw, causing them to bleed.

- does anything cause this type of allergic reaction?
- do any poisons cause this type of reaction (maybe she got into a rat poison in the park)?

thanks!

Hi XXX-X,

It's possible that your dog got stung or bitten on her nose by an insect or spider, or she contacted something outside or in the house, that is causing an allergic reaction. Outside, specific types of grasses, shrubs, flowers, can cause allergic reactions in dogs, upon contact, and cleansers, carpet shampoos, powders, etc., can cause adverse skin reactions, indoors.

If your dog ingested rat poison or any other type of poison, this would cause serious symptoms, internally, so if you feel she may have gotten into rat poison or any other type of toxic substance, she should be evaluated by a vet, immediately. Rat poison prevents the blood from clotting, and is very dangerous.

If your dog is increasingly uncomfortable, and the skin on her nose is not improving/healing, plus she keeps re-opening the area by scratching, definitely get her in to see the vet, today, to get a definite diagnosis and treatment.

I hope all will be well.
