Question

I had a new system installed last week. The new system is much louder and doesn't cool as well. It replaced a unit that was 15years old so I would have thought it would be quieter and would cool better. The technition has checked it multiple times and says everything is ok. What should I do?

Info Request

Hi

What brand is it ? model number also if possible ?

Did they replace the indoor coil with it ?

Is the noise the sound of the compressor or the sound air movement ? If you can tell

Thanks

Everything except the duct work was replaced. An outside unit and an indoor unit. Not a heat pump. I know it is 3.5 ton and my house is just over 2000 sf.

I think it is a Goodman.

The sound is both I think.

Answer

Hi,

There is a compressor sound jacket available to cut down some of the compressor noise and they do help.

To find out if there is something wrong with the unit itself causing the problem you may need to get the distributor's rep out to your home to verify the noise above the rated decibel level. If it is the unit , they will make amends by either changing the unit or providing you with a jacket.

Typically the higher SEER newer units are quieter than most older units but not always as some of the older units were well insulated and you could barely tell they were running, what brand was your old unit ?

Thanks

Mark.

I don't know what brand the old one was. Why would the new one not cool as well?

Accepted Answer

Hi,

If it were lower capacity it would have a problem, can you post the model number so I can verify the capacity and are you sure the old one was 3.5 ton ?

Any other reason is going to be operational with the unit as a 3.5 ton unit no matter what brand has the same capacity as any other 3.5 ton unit.

A couple common reasons would be

1.) The refrigerant charge is not set right, this is critical.

2.) The refrigerant flow metering device is not the proper one for the application or it is not set or seated properly.

3.) The copper line-set is not the right size for the unit. This is becoming more common than it used to be with the higher SEER units as some contractors are not changing the copper lines or are not using the required larger set because they either don;t know or they are trying to save money. Do you know what size line-set you have ? and approximately how long it is ?

Thanks

Mark
