Question

My 2-year old, mostly indoor, tortie cat's fur is changing color and becoming slightly - but noticeably - lighter. My husband thinks that it's because the weather has gotten hot and she's shedding excess fur. However, I'm wondering if the Linatone shed relief supplement I've been giving her for the past month could be the cause. It contains 47.9% linoleic acid (from soybean oil), Vitamins A, E, & D, and Choline. Her coat is incredibly soft and she enjoys being combed and brushed, so there's no dander problem. She received a clean bill of health at her last vet's visit (about 2 months ago) and I haven't noticed any changes in her behavior. So the question is:

What's causing my cat's fur to lighten all over? Is it the weather change or the vitamin supplement? Should I be concerned? Thank you.

Hello, XXXXXXXXX

Linoeic acid is omega 6 fatty acid which is good for her and her coat. It can not change or alter color of hair. It does a great job strengthen hair and softening it, which is why it is in a shed relief supplement.

Weather can alter hair. In the summer hair loss is inevitable. The top coat thins exposing the under coat more. The under coat can be a different color than the top coat. If she outside a lot sun can alter hair color too.

Also as cats age, hair color changes are common, and not just getting white or gray hair like us with old age, but lighter, darker, etc. I have a diluted blue calico and as she has gotten older her blond patches have almost all turned to a creXXX XXXXX.

I wouldn't worry about a bit.

Sincerely, XXXXX
