Have you removed the manifold completely?

Yes the manifold has been remove and is in hand. What other componets need to be removed? I've heard that this carbon build-up is a problem for VW TDIs. The stuff is sticky and gooie.

Accepted Answer

You're going to need quite a bit of solvent, such as a brake cleaner, and a brass brush, much like a test tube brush, about 2" in diameter. Start softening up all of the buildup with the brake cleaner, and start using the brush after it's had a change to soak in for a few minutes. Be sure to cover up the ports on the cylinder head while you have the manifold off so nothing gets into them. Also make sure that any large chunks of buildup are completely out of the intake before you reinstall, so they don't get ingested. Smaller pieces will be burned during combustion. No, the intake does not have to be spotless inside. Make sure to use new gaskets.
