All of a sudden my Acer Aspire 1 ZG5 won't boot up. I turn it on and it gets as far as the

What can I do?

Answer

Hi,
The problem you are facing is caused if any of the drives (cd/dvd or hard drive) is not detected by the m/b and it hangs there if you know how to remove the drives then check them one by one if not then please call a tech check the isue and change the defective drive to reolve the issue.

The Aspire 1 does not have a cd/dvd drive. I have no idea what you mean about
being detected by the "m/b" (what is that?).

How would I remove a hard drive and what is a tech check? Does that mean you have
no advice other thn to call Acer?

Answer

Hi,
M/B means mother board or main board there must be one drive that is hdd and if the m/b cannot detect the hdd then the system hangs in the logo and as you have said there is no cd/dvd drive in it then the hdd is defective there is no need to call acer or any tech although you can try a hard reset and if that didnot help then just take it to any shop and replace the hdd.

Hard Reset.

1.Remove both battery and adaptor.

2.Hold down the power switch for 40 to 50 secs.

3.Try to power on the laptop with the adaptor only.

I was very disappointed with your initial response since it seemed to demonstrate a lack of familiarity with the Acer Aspire One netbook. It referred to disabling the cd/dvd drive, but these netbooks do not come with cd/dvd drives. It also hinted at disabling the hard drive--how does a non-expert even think about doing that? The answer used techie terms such as m/b which meant nothing to me--a non-expert--and seemed to ultimately suggest that the best thing to do was to ask someone else more qualified for assistance ("call a tech").

The reply to my follow up question seemed to ignore the fact that I had attempted to reset and repower several times (and even once removed the battery before
doing so). It then said if that fails to bring it in for repair.

This was my first use of justanswer.com and I thank you for your time and effort. However, since the basic principle here is that the customer must be satisfied, I must respectfully say that I am not satisfied with your answer.

Hi,
I can understand that but is it possible for me to test a hardware problem online I can only suggest you what to do and what may be defective and as I undestand that it is not possible for you to remove or test the hdd thats why I suggested you to call a tech but when you let me know that there is no cd/dvd drive which I have forgotten earlier I became confirmed that it is harddisk problem and when a hard disk is not detected by the main board it seems to be dead ,and as you have said that you have only tried to unplug and replug the laptop that is not a hard reset you have to follow the steps to do a hard reset that I have mentioned in the earlier post.Anyway there is no need to accept as you have not satisfied I am opting out so that other expert can help you with better ideas.

Thanks
