Question

I have a 9 yr. old black lab. About a month ago she suddenly got lethargic and wouldn't move. She looked like she was out of it. By the time I got her to town and found the vet she was alot better, and the next day she seemed tired but was ok. Last week she had some similar problems but not near as bad. Took her to the vet and she gave her a antibotic for an intestial virus. She did pass really bad smelling gas alot. Now everyother day she is fine, but the very next day she will not eat, drink get up etc. Then the next day she seem pretty good. I was wondering if she could get mad cow disease, because on her bad days she staggers, falls down and acts confused. The vet was worried about cancer but hasn't ran any test to know for sure. any ideas?

The most common cause of this loss of balance is an inner ear infection or even vestibular disease. Vestibular disease is a problem in the inner ear and it can cause stroke-like symptoms (falling, stumbling, etc).

No matter what, you need to see the vet as soon as you can for an exam and to discuss your treatment options. This could be simple or it could be major.

Mad cow disease is not a concern.
