Question

I have a 5.0 litre 250 hp mercruiser inboard/outboard engine in my boat. I had the boat winterized and wrapped last year at the end of September. I lowered the engine down on a wood block to take weight off the hydraulic trim pistons before removing the battery from the boat. When I opened up the boat this year I recharged the battery put it in the boat and the engine started right up. When I went to check the trim operation, I found that it was not working. The trim motor did not run at all. No sound. No humming. Nothing. I checked the 20 amp fuse at the trim motor and it was fine. All of the wiring seems to be clean and tight at the motor. What's my next step?

Hello,

Welcome to JustAnswer.com and thank you for your question.

If the trim up/tilt and the trim down are not working or making noise, It would be hard to suspect that both relays are bad. Did you make sure all the wires were reconnected at the battery when you installed it (we usually find that the power and/or ground wire for the trim are accidentally left off when a battery is reinstalled)? If the trim wires are connected at the battery (some models may have the trim wire positive attached at the starter), proceed to the tests/checks below.

I will attach a picture of a typical Mercruiser trim pump. Make sure that you have good battery voltage and ground going to the trim pump (thicker black wire to a bolt on the bracket and thicker red wire going to the fuse block #15). If you have good voltage and ground going to the trim pump, check for battery voltage on both sides of the 110 amp fuse block (#15 in the pic, remove plastic cover #20 if needed) if you have voltage on one side and not the other, the fuse block is blown, also make sure that harness plug (#3 in the pic) is secured, you may want to unplug and securely replug this harness plug....

Thank You for the help. I had the ground for the trim motor attached to the positive on the battery. The trim works fine now.
