Question

We have a pet guinea pig who is a year and a half old. Recently she has stopped eating and drinking. Her eyes have a little gunk around them. I have been unable to find a vet in our area who treats guinea pigs. Any suggestions

Hello:

I am sorry that your piggy is having such a problem.

Anorexia is a medical emergency in pigs because their gastrointestinal system works quite differently then ours, and cannot be without food the way that we can.

The causes of anorexia are way to varied for me to make an educated guess as to why yours is sick, so here are some of the more common reasons for this problem (which is only an indicator of disease, not the disease itself):

  • Diet changes
  • Inappropriate diet
  • Dental disease
  • Obesity
  • Psychological trauma
  • Vitamin C Deficiency
  • I understand that you have not been able to find a pig vet yet. What I would suggest is that you call your local vets and start asking them foe recommendations. Also, try to find an avian practitioner in your area (they frequently will see small mammals). Here is a site ro help you find one: www.aav.org/vet-lookup .

The best you can do for your pig at home is keep him warm and try to hand feed him, but I can almost guarantee you that this will not help, but simply delay his worsening. Please take him in ASAP.
