Question

I have three one year old pine trees that are planted in my back yard, they get 30 minutes of water each day, yet the front (facing the sun) look 'okay' but their needles are falling off in the rear and they are starting to look barren. I feed them this year with Miracle-Gro pine tree spikes and granular food and have a service that feeds and treats all our trees separately from the lawn. These are the third ones that were planted, when we moved in the three that were in these spots were dead, we replanted three new ones and they died within a year due to lack of water, so we installed a separately timed watering system to water them every day at noon for 30 minutes. I am totally lost and don't want to lose three more gorgeous pines, ANY help is appreciated.

Thank you,

They are between 6 to 7 feet tall.
The soil does not appear to drying out.
I live in Farmingdael, NJ 07727.
The brown needles just started to appear about two weeks ago, but again, ONLY in the back (shade) side of the trees.

Accepted Answer

I suspect a problem with the soil staying too wet. Click here for some good basic information on watering plants. The amount of water needed will depend on the soil texture, density, and daily temperatures. On average one to three inches of water per week should keep the pine trees healthy. I will reccomend that you call Glenn W. Freeman (609) XXX-XXXX for his recommendations of a source to have the soil tested since it may not be correct for the pine trees. Should you require further clarification, never hesitate to ask. It would be my pleasure to clarify my answer to your question.
