Question

Is there a medicine to help cats stop sneezing & wheezing? Vet has tried amoxicilin, clindamycin , clavamox , chlor-pheniramine as well as the antibiotic injection (similar to clavamox) supposed to last for 2 weeks . All have helped some but symtoms shortly do return. I feed, care for as well as schedule vet trips for stray cats/kittens that show up. The last couple have had symptoms of sneezing, wheezing , nose & eye drainage. Just recently took a mama cat to get checked out and spayed and at which time she tested negative for feline leukemia and positive for kitty aids. Again, these are stray outside cats that come & go there is no way I can prevent them from sharing dishes (fed Purina Friskies I might add) so I need to find a medicine (to inform my vet) to give the sick ones to help them breathe without difficulty & try to prevent this from spreading. All help is greatly appreciated! It tears my heart out to see animals suffer! May God Bless You! XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Optional Information

Already Tried:
More than one cat/kitten has been to vet with this same problem. So far(and currently) tried Amoxiciln, Clindamycin, Clavamox,CHLOR-PHENIRAMINE tablets as well as an antibiotic injection similar to Clavamox which is supposed to last for a 2 week period. At wits end have vet as well as myself puzzled. These medicines have short term effect. Need something that can give total/long term relief. As stated these are outside stray cats/kittens . When show up sick take to vet to be checked out. Other symtems are at times discharge from nose and/or eyes. The Tobramycin Ophthalmic solution and/or Vetropolycin do well on eyes. The CHLOR-PHENIRAMINE seems to help best with the nose discharge/wheezing however short term effect. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! As stated earlier took the one mama cat to vet to be checked/tested for aids/leukemia/spaying. She tested negative for leukima but positive for aids. She has no signs of breathing problems however 2 of her kittens do. Will pass info on to my vet to try running out of ideas on what to do to help cats/kittens breathe without difficulty and to prevent spreading any further.

It sounds like the cat colony has an upper respiratory virus that is being passed around. You can read about these diseases here

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/feline_upper_respiratory.html

Sharing dishes and being in close proximity to other sick cats will pass such diseases around.

For your own cats keeping them as inside pets with no access to the strays may be safest though of course vaccination will reduce risks of getting infections.

Feline aids is contagious too

Unfortunately for viral infections there is not a lot that can be done other than vaccination or treatment of symptoms.

Hope this helps you!

Just a note to say thanks for your time & attention regarding this matter! It seems all that can be done is being done. I just wanted to check to see if there was anything we were missing that could possibly help. My (3) inside are strickly inside cats all spayed & neutered & current with vet visits etc. Outside strays never come inside however, have built a kitty enclosures to keep safe from elements etc as much as possible . Unfortunately some are still somewhat afraid so can't catch and contain for long. As a note, the enclosures have own air vents overhead, door with window as well as kitty door, heat in winter, as well as lighting. This is mostly to try to keep current on vet visits & to keep safe from other animals it also makes it easier to catch for spay/neuter. Have a nice day! Thanks Again!

Answer

You are welcome and thanks for the above accept.

You might want to work with a group that could help rehome some of the younger or friendlier ones. Check out the cat rescue groups in your area on www.petfinder.com or go to the local pet section on www.craigslist.org and ask about local cat rescue groups.

I'll close out this question now.
