Question

How can I tell if a coil is bad. The lower spark plug is wet when I remove it after running the engine. Also seems to smoke excessively.I have rebuilt the car. What is the best way to remove the fly wheel to get to the coil on a 40355D 40 hp evinrude.

Answer

  1. remove the (3) outer bolts holding the recoil mechanism that is mounted over the flywheel itself
  2. remove the (3) small bolts holding the ratchet mechanism to the flywheel.
  3. remove the crankshaft nut which is in the center of the flywheel
  4. You will now need a flywheel puller to remove the flywheel. A harmonic balancer puller can be substituted if the slots in the puller line up with 3 of the 5/16" bolt holes in the top of the flywheel.
  5. The puller has a long threaded bolt that sits in the indent of the crankshaft. You hold the flywheel friom turning, thighten that center bolt and after it seems you are going to break something from the effort the flywheel will suddenly "pop" loose.
  6. A trick is to tap the bolt hard with a heavy hammer after you have tightened the bolt till you can't crank any more on the ratchet. It should pop loose with a direct blow or two.

There are two ignition coils mounted on the magneto plate under the flywheel. two sets of points and 2 condensors. If you see the coils are cracked (at all) replace them both along with the points and condensors.

Hope this is helpful.

Is there a way to tell if the coil is bad before I try to remove the flywheel. I tried to remove it before without much luck using a harmonic puller but since this is a 200.00 item I was afraid I would break it. Is the flywheel stronger than it appears.

Accepted Answer

A spark tester will tell you if you have cranking spark while pulling the recoil or keying the electric starter. However it wont tell you if you are loosing spark once the coils get hot which is when a crack would get even larger and arc to the mag plate.

You can use a timing light while the engine is running to see if you have goos steady spark on each cyl while the problem is occuring. This is a more accurate test.

In response to your question about the flywheel. Yes it is alot stronger than it appears. The weak point is the (3) 5/16 holes you hold the puller to the flywheel with. Make sure they are good grade bolts and tighten them securely before trying again.

Good luck!
